Nicely done Apple! After updating my iPhone 3GS to iOS 4.0.1 I started seeing quite a number of issues on my iPhone 3GS. Firstly I lost all my contacts – yes that’s right! That was so cruel I almost cried :( . But then I remembered that I had a backup of my numbers on my Macbook. OK, guess syncing my iPhone to the Macbook at least once a month is worth it after all. But the funny part was that I did not lose my contacts immediately after updating the OS. It was perfectly fine for a couple of days and then suddenly one day the contacts mysteriously disappeared right after a phone call. Weird! I wonder if anyone else has seen this kind of behavior before?

I’m sure by now everyone who has an iPhone 3G or 3GS will be on iOS4 (I hope the 2G and 3G folks don’t feel left behind). OS4 is really cool for users in many ways. Multitasking, home screen customization, camera zoom, new mail handling capabilities etc etc. So that’s for the users. What about developers? How is iOS4 going to help developers? As Steve Jobs had announced back in April, iAd is going to “revolutionize” the way that application developers will be making money from Apple. I will be first introducing my readers to what iAd is all about and then will follow up with a post on how to integrate iAd into your applications.

How to install iOS4 on your iPhone 3GS (GM seed version)

Right after I wrote the post on how iOS4 is running on my iPhone 3GS I had people asking me on how I installed the GM seed version on my iPhone 3GS. In fact its a very simple procedure and almost like restoring your phone. But take note that you will need to backup your data because everything will be wiped out when you restore your iPhone. The best part is that the device UDID is not necessary – so if you have a friend who has a developer’s account go ahead and get yourself the iOS GM seed version on your 3GS right away! Here’s a cool video that I followed to get my iPhone 3GS to be upgraded to iOS4.

I’ve been really excited since the announcement of the iPhone 4 as well as the iOS4 firmware release last week. Almost everything I wanted on the iPhone will soon be available. The technical advancements made on the iOS4 firmware is pretty neat compared to the previous versions – especially multitasking which has been a big shortfall for a phone which relies so heavily on apps. Not being able to wait until June 25th for the official I went ahead and downloaded the seed version of iOS4 from the iphone developer website – yes being an iphone app developer certainly has its advantages :)

Holy cow! Apple sold 60,000 iPhones in a day in Korea!

Yep that’s right – 1 day, 60,000 iPhones in Korea. That’s considered really good compared to sales of about only 5000 in China during the first week! Anyone has the numbers for *ehem* Malaysia?

Here’s an extract from the report from International Business Times:

KT priced the 32-gigabyte iPhone 3GS at 369,000 won ($317) for customers subscribing to monthly plans based on the basic rate of 45,000 won ($38). Subscribers paying 65,000 won ($56) in basic rates can have the iPhone for 264,000 won ($227), while premium users signing up for monthly plans based on a 132,000 won ($113) basic rate could have the phones for free.

The 8-gigabtye iPhones were priced at 132,000 won ($113) for subscribers signed on the 45,000 won ($38) monthly plans.

As iPhone made its formal debut in China on October 30 through China Unicom, South Korea is one of the last major countries in Asia to get the iPhone which is also on sale in Japan, India and Australia.

Way to go Apple!

Is it really worthwhile to upgrade to iPhone 3.1?

iPhone OS 3.1

Hope you all had a chance to read up on my roundup on the latest iPhone version 3.1 as well as iTunes 9.0. Now that all the excitement around it has abated, I have been reading quite a bit about some of the quirks associated with this new firmware update. Its never surprising to hear that a new firmware update has some issues but some of them I have been reading doesn’t make Apple look good at all. Apple should have been more careful before releasing the iPhone firmware update version 3.1. Here are some of the issues that have been reported in Apple’s discussion forums.

This is a continuation of A roundup of iTunes 9.0 and iPhone OS 3.1 – part 1. In the previous post we saw some of the neat (and not so neat) stuff that comes with iTunes 9.0. So what’s new with iPhone OS 3.1 then? Well before you install iPhone OS 3.1 you will need to download iTunes 9.0. Once you’ve done that then you got to of course download iPhone OS 3.1 (which is a pretty huge file) and this would probably take you quite some time if you’re on Streamyx – how surprising (trying to keep a straight face here).

The entire blogosphere is buzzing with information right from Apple’s new range of iPods, Steve Jobs’ health and the latest and greatest iTunes 9.0 – of course with a little mention of iPhone OS 3.1. Somehow I feel that the iPods and iTunes have taken the limelight in comparison to Apple’s latest firmware release for the iPhone. I had anticipated not many drastic changes to version 3.1 and my assumption proved to be correct. Subtle changes have been made which I will be discussing in a while, but more importantly lets discuss iTunes 9.0 first.

Why I love my maxis iPhone 3G S

maxis iphone 3G SI finally got my iPhone 3G S from maxis on the 31st of July. Luckily I booked my unit at the maxis center in Queensbay Mall in Penang and even though they only opened at 10.30 AM, there was no crowd. I made my way to the maxis center expecting my unit to be ready only to be told that the number porting for my digi number wasn’t done yet. So I couldn’t get my unit on the same day. But I was so eager to get the unit that I decided to accept their inefficiency and sign up for an all new maxis number which would mean that I could get the unit on the same day! That worked well and in fact I got the unit within an hour.

iphone 3G S maxisIt’s been almost a month since my last post and I finally decided to get back to blogging. I’m sure many of you are aware of the hype surrounding the all new iPhone 3G S that was announced a few weeks ago. Being a devout Apple follower, I couldn’t help myself from ordering the first batch that is due to arrive in Malaysia on the 31st of July. Yes, I signed up with Maxis for a 12 months package and the phone costs me RM 1910. I have a 016 number which I am converting to Maxis, but it looks like that means I would not be able to sign up for a 24 months package and enjoy a further discount on the iPhone 3G S itself.
