Is it really worthwhile to upgrade to iPhone 3.1?

Hope you all had a chance to read up on my roundup on the latest iPhone version 3.1 as well as iTunes 9.0. Now that all the excitement around it has abated, I have been reading quite a bit about some of the quirks associated with this new firmware update. Its never surprising to hear that a new firmware update has some issues but some of them I have been reading doesn’t make Apple look good at all. Apple should have been more careful before releasing the iPhone firmware update version 3.1. Here are some of the issues that have been reported in Apple’s discussion forums.
1. Occasional total shutdown – Occurs without warning, needs a manual reboot to revive your iPhone. Sickening!
2. Battery life affected – OK, this is something serious. I’ve already been whining that the battery life is just too short for an entertainment device like the iPhone but some users have complained that upgrading to version 3.1 has actually decreased battery life dramatically. Some stupid power management issues I suppose. Irritating!
3. Podcasts showing up in random order – Podcasts not following the date to be sorted. Stupid!
4. Problem syncing Exchange Email – Apparently this issue is only affecting the iPhone 2G, iPod Touch and the iPhone 3G. The chosen ones (like me) who are using the iPhone 3GS will not be affected. There’s a problem with the encryption and the iPhone 3GS has built in encryption support and hence not affected by this issue. Dumb!
5. Quieter ticks while using the keyboard – Something that I have written before. Not a big deal but I miss the louder ticks. Nostalgic!
6. Auto brightness not working – Always has the same brightness, be it night or day. Very un-iPhonish!
7. Dropping more calls – Here we go again!
8. Problems sending SMS – refer back to #7. I’m getting tired finding adjectives.
So looking at these reasons I wonder whether I should have actually updated my iPhone at all! Of course I haven’t encountered all these issues except #5 and #6 which I think I can live with. If it gets too annoying then I will just restore back to version 3.0 and wait for 3.2!
