Well we at least know that the iPhone 3G is not going to be officially launched in Malaysia anytime soon. But if you’re a gadget freak like me, I’m sure you are longing to get one anyway and unlock it. The usual practice has been to insert a “turbo sim” along with the sim card of your choice to unlock the iPhone. But this method will not work with firmware 2.2 and above. Those “turbo sims” have been really unreliable anyway. I have burnt a few bucks buying them on ebay. But fret not – there is an easier way to do this with just a software unlock.

First of all you will need to jailbreak your iPhone 3G. Yes, that’s the only way that this method will work. But nothing to worry since all the functionality of your sexy iPhone 3G is still maintained. It just cant be upgraded on iTunes anymore as it will not be recognized as a legal unit.

Once you have jailbroken the iPhone 3G follow these simple steps:

To perform the unlock you must install the yellowsn0w package from one of the following sources:
- Cydia source: http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/
- Installer repo: http://i.yellowsn0w.com/

There is also a very good tutorial which has been written up by them and I tried as well. Yes it works, but sometimes the iPhone 3G might take some time to pick up the signal. You could try the following if that happens:

- Switch off WiFi
- Toggle 3G mode
- Toggle airplane mode

I tried these steps and it worked like a charm for me. I am currently happily using my iPhone 3G with my maxis sim card with no issues whatsoever.
