My Buffalo Drivestation 1TB external hard drive rocks!

buffalo-1tb-drivestation-13I never thought I’d ever own a 1TB (yeah that’s 1 Tera Byte) external hard disk ever. To put it in perspective, 1TB is about 1024 GB of data – easily 4 to 5 times the capacity of most common hard disks nowadays. And how much did I get my Bufallo Drivestation 1TB external hard disk for? Well I got mine for a mere RM 395 from PC Depot in Penang. That’s cheap considering the fact that I got a 120GB Samsung external hard disk for RM 350 just a couple of years ago.

If you leave the mind boggling data capacity aside, this external drive still packs a few punches. It comes with a power savings feature which apparently saves power consumption by up to 75%. It is completely silent, runs very cool and is very cool to look at.

It worked right out of the box and I didn’t have to install any drivers whatsoever in my Apple Macbook. It also has the ability of turning on and off along with your PC but that’s of no use to me since I use it with a laptop. It’s not connected to my external hard drive all the time so I manually switch it on and off when required. I also like the memeo software which comes along with it and it performs a decent job as an auto backup software. If you think you don’t want to use that, then you could use your favorite auto backup software like Time Machine which comes free on the Mac.

It also comes with Secure Lock Ware which basically encrypts your data but this works only with Windows PCs. So for me its of no use. The formatted capacity is 931GB which is pretty normal for a 1TB hard drive. The turbo USB speed is pretty decent while transferring large amounts of data as well.

Overall I feel this is a good buy. Only issue is that the external hard drive requires a power adapter but this is the norm currently for 1TB external drives such as this from Buffalo. So if you are like me with a huge library of music, photos, pictures, videos and source codes you might want to get one for yourself too!

I gt dis HDD oso since Mac 09, bt it spoilt/malfunction after 3 months of use. I sent it 2 service center bt it took me 1 month time 4 replacement n they din backup any data 4 me. I was very angry wif dis kind of stupid service. Worst is, they juz replace an old/second hand HDD 4 me. I realy hate Buffalo HDD n its customer service in ECS KL. Rmb, nvm buy dis stupid Buffalo HDD products, if nt u may lost ALL ur valuable data inside Buffalo, bcos lousy Samsung HDD inside. RMB, NVM BUY IT !!!

Hi Witness,

Very sorry to hear about your experience with Buffalo. So far I have been pretty happy with its performance and havent experiences any issues. Maybe yours is a one off incident?

I bought the HDD as a gift to my husband for his birthday. Sadly the thing just broke down after just 2 months. Open up the case and I found out that the arm is faulty. I’ve asked around and later found out that it’ll cost me 5K to recover the data. I’ve lost memorable photos because of trusting the brand.

matblogger, you’re lucky to have yours working fine but always backup your important stuff regardless. I learnt my lesson the hard way.

HI Matblogger,

I bought mine some tome ago but recently the HD just started playing an unusual sound at the start up, worst is that it does not pick up any connections drivers, so currently its useless! Also i purchased this whilst i was on holiday in EU. Do you have any idea how to reload this, i dont mind if i loose the data but still would like to use it. any ideas?

hello…i bought it last 2 months n it works really well until now. for me, it’s really great coz i bought it for RM299 during the last PC Fair. the design is great, small plug, easy to install, 3 years warranty n it satisfies me more than i use WD..(for now la)

however, when i heard all of ur comments, i rilly look forward to all of ur comments so i can take any prevention before anything bad happens…

i can afford if the harddisk broke or whatever but no for MEMORY LOSS!! i have kept a lot of thing inside it & it’s totally a MESS if it happen..
