Are Malaysians Tech Savvy?

We live in a country which is pretty much the epicenter of technology companies in this region. We have our own silicon valley (a.k.a Penang), our own IT hub (a.k.a Cyberjaya), broadband connections, 3.5G networks, WiMax, RFID toll systems and jailbroken iPhones. Definitely a sign that this is a country which has bright future with some great minds around.

I have certainly seen that the adoption rate for new cell phones is far greater than many other bigger countries. It certainly shows that Malaysians are definitely tech savvy – or not? Is it a case of just vanity taking control rather than logical thinking? Why would you need to use a 3G phone when you can’t even afford a post paid plan from your carrier like Maxis or Celcom? And has anyone tried using the 3G networks other than klang valley? From my experience I can definitely say that a lot of work needs to be done to improve the services and infrastructure if we want more Malaysians to adopt new technology and gadgets.

Anyway, I still think that its not all doom and gloom and there are some silver linings which we can be proud of. Slowly but surely Malaysians are beginning to realize the importance of science and technology to be ahead of the race. I am sure that we will definitely have a great infrastructure to rely upon when new technology and gadgets become available at the end of this painful recession. Malaysians are definitely getting tech savvy and the new generation has been exposed to a lot more technology than before. It is clearly evident that quite a number of Malaysian companies are also innovating in the areas of science and technology which is great for a developing country such as ours.

In short – my opinion is “Yes, Malaysians are Tech Savvy” and hungry for knowledge. Definitely a long road ahead but we’re on the right track.
